Mumps - Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

Mumps is a contagious viral infection that used to be common in children. Before the development of vaccination, it was a common childhood disease worldwide. It’s most recognizable by the painful swellings of the salivary glands at the side of the face under the ears (parotid glands).

Diagnosis of mumps:

If your doctor suspects that you or your child has mumps, a virus culture (PCR) or a blood test may be needed. Your immune system normally makes antibodies to help you fight an infection. So if you have mumps, the blood test can detect the antibodies in your system that are fighting the mumps virus.

Treatment options for mumps:

Because mumps is caused by a virus, antibiotics aren't effective. Like most viral illnesses, a mumps infection must simply run its course. Fortunately, most children and adults recover from an uncomplicated case of mumps within about two weeks. If you or your child has mumps, time and rest are the best treatments. You can take some steps to ease pain and discomfort and keep others from becoming infected.
Rest in bed until the fever goes away.
Isolate yourself or your child to prevent spreading the disease to others. Take pain relievers
Use a warm or cold compress to ease the pain of swollen glands.
Avoid foods that require lots of chewing. Instead, try broth-based soups or soft foods, such as mashed potatoes or cooked oatmeal, for nourishment.
Avoid citrus fruits or juices, which stimulate saliva production.
Drink plenty of fluids

Complications of mumps:

Mumps will usually pass without causing serious damage to a person’s health. Serious complications are rare. Most mumps complications involve inflammation and swelling in some part of the body, such as testicles, pancreas, ovaries, breasts and brain membranes and fluid around the brain and spinal cord. In rare cases, mumps can cause hearing loss and pregnancy loss.

Prevention of mumps:

In general, you’re considered immune to mumps if you've previously had the infection or if you've been immunized against mumps. The mumps vaccine is usually given as a combined measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, which contains the safest and most effective form of each vaccine.

Two doses of the MMR vaccine are recommended before a child enters school:
The first between ages 12 and 15 months
The second between ages 4 and 6 years, or between 11 and 12 if not previously given

Once both doses are given, the vaccine provides 95% protection against mumps.

ChickenPox: Causes, Diagnosis And Treatment Guide

ChickenPox: Causes, Diagnosis And Treatment Guide
It’s summer time having allot of heat in which itches and rashes are common. A common disease in the summer, chicken pox occurs mostly in children and sometimes in adults. Rashes that are accompanied with fever between the range of 102 to 103 degrees and general fatigue are the most tell-tale symptoms of the disease.

Chicken pox is a condition that is caused due to infection by a virus called Varicella Zoster virus (VZV). It is a highly contagious disease that is spread via contact with an infected person. Although it is believed that chicken pox is spread mostly by particles in the air, the most common way a person can get infected is by touching objects that may have been used by the patient. So avoid it so as to be safe.

Once the rashes appear, a person with chicken pox should not be in contact with other people, as he/she is highly contagious at this time. After about seven to ten days, the rashes dry out and a scab forms. Once these scabs fall off, a person is considered non-contagious. A person usually suffers from chicken pox for about 10-15 days. Chicken pox is usually seen in children under the age of 15 but can occur in adults as well. Doctors say that if an adult suffers from the disease, it usually lasts longer and is more severe. The good thing is if you get the disease once you can’t get it again. This is because the body manufactures antibodies against the virus and prevents it from occurring again. The disease takes about 14 to 24 days after infection to manifest as symptoms.

Pregnant woman have higher risk as they have chicken pox as it leads to have a weak immune system which can affect the foetus and mother very adversely. If a pregnant woman contracts the disease between the first and second trimester of pregnancy there is less chance but chance is that the baby may be born with a condition called Congenital Varicella Syndrome (CVS). In this condition the child is born with certain congenital defects such as malformation of limbs scarring of the skin, , an abnormally small head, some neurological problems and vision defects. A woman and her child are at greatest risk if chicken pox is contracted between the 13th and 20th week of pregnancy and five days before delivery and two days after delivery. This kind of chicken pox can give the baby what is called newborn chicken pox.

Do and Do not's:-

Have a bath in warm water infused with neem leaves. Another natural remedy for itchiness of the rash is to soak some oatmeal in warm water and use it for a bath. This will help to reduce the itchiness and get rid of any skin infections that might occur. Do use calamine lotion to soothe the skin, ask for a lotion that soothes the skin while not making it dry. Drying the skin could increase the itchiness.
Do not scratch the rashes. Scratching them can cause severe skin infections. Apart from the obvious disadvantages of scratching, the pus that oozes out from the rash can spread infection to other people.
Do take adequate rest, do not over exert yourself. This will delay the recovery process by weakening your immune system. Do stay away or keep your child away from other children and people. Chicken pox is highly contagious and is easily spread.
Do wear or put socks on your child’s hands at night so that they don’t scratch their rashes while sleeping. Remember to cut your nails well so as to avoid scratching yourself. To relieve the itchiness you could wash a bunch of neem leaves in warm water and stroke it over the rashes.

So here is all about chicken pox do consult with your doctor if u find symptoms in you. For any query do ask me i will be happy to answer you.
